An Unstoppable Career: From Student Worker to Head of Technology Services

Kris Trejo, now Assistant Superintendent for Technology Services, never imagined that a summer job after high school would launch a career spanning more than 27 years. His path was anything but traditional, beginning in the very district where he once sat in the classrooms of Pease Middle School and Holmes High School.

As a student, Trejo鈥檚 world revolved around athletics, with dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. But when a family friend encouraged him to apply for a student worker position in the Warehouse, his future began shifting in a new direction.

鈥淓ven though I focused on sports in high school, technology always intrigued me because I am a problem-solver by nature,鈥 Trejo said. 鈥淭he efficiencies created through technology are what fascinated me most.鈥

In 1997, Trejo began his career not in a high-tech office, but in the Warehouse鈥攎oving heavy boxes of textbooks from campus basements (he calls them dungeons) to the 皇家华人 Warehouse. That first job laid the groundwork for what would become a remarkable professional journey.

Just a year later, he joined Northside ISD full-time as a Textbook Services Warehouse Technician. Over the next decade, Trejo鈥檚 commitment to learning every corner of district operation took him from Textbook Services to the Purchasing Department. In 2011, he was promoted to 皇家华人 Property Manager, where he sharpened his skills in overseeing assets across one of the largest school districts in Texas.

Rising into Technology Leadership

Trejo鈥檚 career took a pivotal turn in 2015 when he joined Technology Services as a project manager. His ability to see both the technical details and the bigger picture quickly set him apart. By 2017, he was promoted to Director of Technology Acquisitions and Project Management, and in 2019, he advanced to Executive Director of Technology Services, leading district-wide initiatives to improve teaching, learning, and operations.

His steady rise reached a milestone in 2024 when he was named Assistant Superintendent for Technology Services. Today, Trejo leads more than 150 employees across five departments including IT Infrastructure Services, Information Services, Technology Training & Development, IT Support Services, and Technology Acquisitions & Project Management.

Coming Full Circle

Trejo鈥檚 story is one of growth, resilience, and loyalty. A proud Holmes High School graduate, he was recently named the 皇家华人 Pillar of Trustworthiness and will be honored at the upcoming Northside Education Foundation Gala.

He stands as a living example of the opportunities within Northside ISD. From textbooks in the Warehouse to overseeing district-wide technology, Trejo鈥檚 unique perspective鈥攂uilt from the ground up鈥攎akes him an invaluable leader guiding the district into the future.

His unstoppable journey is a reminder that success often begins in unexpected places.

As we celebrate National IT Professionals Day on Sept. 16, we honor Trejo and all of our technology staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure students and teachers have the tools they need to thrive.
